May is here, and so is Melanoma Awareness Month! ☀️ Let’s shine a light on the most serious type of skin cancer. 🕶️
Did you know melanoma can affect anyone, regardless of skin color? It’s time to spread the word about prevention, early detection, and support for those fighting this battle. 💪 Join us in raising awareness, scheduling skin checks, and practicing sun safety all year round. Together, we can make a difference! 🌟
Know what to look for using the ABCDEs of melanoma:
“A” stands for Asymmetry: Melanomas are often asymmetrical, meaning one half doesn’t match the other half.
“B” stands for Border: Melanomas usually have irregular, jagged, or blurred borders rather than smooth edges.
“C” stands for Color: Melanomas can vary in color, with shades of brown, black, or even pink, red, or white. Multiple colors or uneven distribution of color within a mole can be a warning sign.
“D” stands for Diameter: Melanomas are typically larger in diameter than ordinary moles, usually larger than the eraser of a pencil (about 6mm or 1/4 inch), although they can sometimes be smaller.
“E” stands for Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or elevation of a mole, or any new symptoms such as itching, bleeding, or crusting, could be a sign of melanoma.
Early detection is key, so let’s stay vigilant and keep our skin healthy. Schedule your next skin check online at www.clearviewdermatology.com!

Prevention & Correction
The Fraxel laser is an incredible tool we have to treat photodamage and aging!
What does it feel like?
Patients describe it like “prickly heat” as the laser moves across their skin. Topical anesthesia is applied prior to treatment and cold air is used on the treatment area during the procedure to limit the discomfort yet maximize the result.
Day 0 treatment day: redness and mild swelling
Day 1-2 post-treatment day: mild swelling and generalized redness
Day 3-6: mild swelling resolves, light coffee ground peeling occurs
Day 7-8: peeling is complete and new glowing skin is revealed
This treatment is awesome at improving the overall tone and texture of your skin!
Let’s start your skin health journey today with Clearview Dermatology.
Let’s clear the persistent flushing & blushing!
The Excel V+ laser can help you achieve that goal.
- 2-3 treatments
- 1 month apart
- minimal sun exposure when treating

- results seen 1 month after each treatment
- non-invasive and patients may wear makeup post procedure
Excel V+ & Fraxel are two versatile lasers that Clearview Dermatology has to offer in Arvada. Addressing both discoloration and achieving a tighter & brighter complexion.
We LOVE incorporating lasers into your long term skincare journey. These are procedures that can be done on most skin types & with minimal “downtime”. Let us help you keep your skin in great shape throughout the years.

Skin Cancer can be scary, especially when it’s on your face. Did you know that Mohs surgeons treat more skin cancers on the face than any other specialty? Trust your care to the Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained Experts at Clearview Dermatology.
#MohsSurgery #melanoma #TumorTuesday
One of the scariest skin cancers for patients and Dermatologists alike is Melanoma. Melanoma can spread quickly and be difficult to treat once it has spread. In the early stages of Melanoma when it is localized to the skin, the most critical part of getting to a cure is ensuring the surgical margins are clear. Numerous studies over the last two decades have shown that Mohs Micrographic Surgery and surgery with complete circumferential margin assessment (looking at 100% of the margin) provides a higher cure rate than with the old method known as “Wide Local Excision”. This difference is most apparent in areas of the body known as specialty sites: head, face, hands, feet, and genitalia. In these areas, looking at 100% of the margins (vs 2% with Wide Local Excision) is critical to achieving a high cure rate and preventing recurrence. This is not to say Wide Local Excision does not have a place for treating Melanoma on the trunk and extremities where larger safety margins can be taken around the tumor. However, when possible, treating superficial and invasive melanomas with Mohs Micrographic Surgery on these specialty sites provides the highest cure rate available.
This patient had a large melanoma on the left side of his nose that was treated with Mohs Surgery and repaired by Dr. Overman with a combination of a transposition flap and a graft, both precisely placed to respect the natural cosmetic subunits of his nose. The serious nature of melanoma and the complex repairs required after removing them underlies the importance of seeing a Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Mohs surgeon with extensive reconstructive and melanoma surgery experience.
This patient was kind enough to allow us to share these photos for educational purposes.
#MohsSurgery #SkinCancer #MohsMonday
It’s always best to find skin cancers early, especially when they are an aggressive type of Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC). This patient was fortunate that her aggressive type of BCC was found early when it was relatively small. Thankfully it only required two stages/layers of Mohs surgery to clear the tumor.
While clearing the skin cancer requires an in-depth knowledge of dermatopathology (what tumor looks like under the microscope), repairing the defect requires an intimate knowledge of anatomy and plastic surgery. For this defect, Dr. Overman chose an intricate flap known as a bilobed transposition flap. This innovative flap was designed and updated to its current form by a ground-breaking Mohs surgeon, John Zitelli in 1989. Using this flap, we are able to recruit tissue from an area of laxity on the nose and transpose it into the defect, while maintaining the natural shape of the nose. The underlies the importance of seeing a Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Mohs surgeon with extensive reconstructive surgery experience.
The patient is seen in the final photo at 3 weeks and while she was thrilled with the result already, the scar will disappear even more over the next few months, becoming nearly invisible after 6 months.
If you or a family member develop a skin cancer, ask to see a Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Mohs Surgeon.

Can you spot the melanoma?
The spot circled in the second photo was an invasive melanoma.
Could melanoma be lurking under your tattoo?
Tattoos can make it more difficult to evaluate moles. The ink can hide suspicious changes in your moles.
Laser removal therapy may also be problematic when moles are present in a tattoo and it may delay the diagnosis of melanoma
A review of the topic in the Journal of the American Medical Association came to two key take-home lessons:
• If you are considering getting a tattoo, either make sure it will be applied to skin that is free or moles or birthmarks, or have your doctor check any moles in the to-be-tattooed area beforehand.
• If you are planning to have a tattoo removed, check for moles within the tattoo. If you see any, ask your doctor or dermatologist to check them out before starting laser therapy.

Sometimes the traditional approaches to acne don’t work for everyone. Sometimes patients don’t tolerate medications or prefer not to take medications. This wonderful patient was suffering from severe cystic acne and had failed multiple treatments. He did not want to take isotretinoin (Accutane) or use any more topical medications so we formulated a specialized treatment plan of Laser Genesis and Diamond Glow Treatments. Laser Genesis uses a gentle 532nm and 1064nm laser to treat acne by reducing inflammation and the population of acne-causing bacteria on the skin. There is essentially no downtime and it is almost painless. Diamond Glow treatments use a specialized diamond-tipped hand-piece to suck all the gunk and dead skin out of your pores so your skin can breathe again.
This after picture here is shown after only 2 Laser Genesis treatments and 1 Diamond Glow treatment. He was not using any other acne medications during this time.
If you’re looking for a different way to treat your acne, schedule a visit with us today and find out what treatment regimen would work best for you!
Receiving notes like this always brightens up our day! Our staff works hard to be attentive to all our patient's needs and provide a comforting and compassionate environment. We love our amazing patients!

Having a tumor near the eyes can be a scary experience. This lovely patient had a basal cell carcinoma near the border of her cheek, nose and eyelid. She entrusted her care to our team at Clearview Dermatology (for the second time in less than a year).
This tumor required two stages/layers of Mohs Surgery to clear. The entire procedure was done in our state of the art office using an island pedicle flap aka a V to Y advancement type repair.
The patient is seen in the final photo at 6 weeks with an excellent functional and cosmetic result. Although the scar already looks great, we always advise our patients that scars take 6-12 months to mature so the appearance will continue to improve every month.
If you or a family member develop a skin cancer, ask to see a Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Mohs Surgeon.

Acne on the back (aka “Backne”) can be very difficult to treat with over the counter medications and topical prescription medications. Fortunately, there is a medication that works quite well for this type of acne. Isotretinoin, or Accutane, has been around for decades and works by shrinking the oil glands in the skin and effectively altering the microbiome of the skin so that less acne occurs. Unlike all other acne medications, it usually only needs to be taken for 8-12 months after which the majority of the acne is gone forever. If you’ve got bad acne that just doesn’t seem to go away with different treatments, schedule a visit today to find out what treatment is best for you! We are now booking appointments for both our Arvada and Evergreen locations.
We are hiring! We are looking for hard-working, professional and team-oriented medical assistants for our new Evergreen location! Send your resume to info@clearviewdermatology.com

Lips are an important component of a beautiful smile. This patient was concerned about her asymmetric smile and excessive gingival show (aka “Gummie Smile”). She wanted natural yet noticeable improvement in these bothersome areas.
To fix these issues we used a combination of lip filler for a subtle increase in volume along with the some very precisely placed botox for what is known as a “lip flip”. These subtle adjustments allowed this patient to continue to look like herself while increasing her confidence in her smile!

Ears are often forgotten when it comes sunscreen applications. They stick out from our heads and catch more sun than other areas, particularly in men who often don’t wear longer hair styles that might provide some protection from the sun.
We counsel every patient we see to apply daily sunscreen to the face, ears and neck as these are common areas for the cumulative UV radiation exposure to cause skin cancers over the course of decades of exposure.
This patient developed a Squamous Cell Carcinoma on his ear requiring two stages of Mohs surgery to clear. After ensuring the tumor was completely removed, options for repairs were discussed. In this area, healing naturally without any further surgery can often do well, however when there is cartilage exposed the healing process can be prolonged and unreliable. This patient wanted the faster route to healing with the better cosmetic result so a helical rim advancement flap was performed. The helical rim advancement flap is a site specific, specialized flap used to access skin laxity in the earlobe to cover the surgical defect.
The patient experienced minimal pain after the surgery and was very happy with the cosmetic result at 1 month after the surgery.
If you or a family member develop a skin cancer, ask to see a Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified Mohs Surgeon.

Sometimes what appears to be a small skin cancer can be something much larger. This patient presented with a 1.2cm Basal Cell Carcinoma on his cheek. On the day of his Mohs Surgery, the tumor was found to be much more extensive than originally thought. It extended down through the fat and muscle to the bone on his nasal sidewall and cheek and completely through the nasal ala. It required six stages/rounds of Mohs Surgery to clear the tumor (all on the same day). Fortunately, we were able to confirm the tumor was completely out by checking the margins in real time in our in-house lab.
Knowing that the tumor was completely gone, we were then ready to repair the wound. With such a large defect, a complex multi-subunit repair was required. An V to Y advancement flap was designed from his inferior medial cheek to re-create the inferior cheek - nose junction. His superior cheek was advanced medially to recreate the superior medial cheek - nasal sidewall junction. Finally a fold-over paramedian forehead flap was used to rebuild the lining of the nose, the nasal Ala and the nasal sidewall.
The pedicle that supplies the blood to the paramedian forehead flap will remain in place for three weeks until it has established its own blood supply on the nose. At that time, the pedicle will be cut from the nose and eyebrow and the flap will be trimmed to fit nicely within the nasal sidewall defect.
All of this was done in our modern surgical suite under local anesthesia and the patient was comfortable enough that he slept through most of the procedure.
Most Mohs surgeries done at Clearview Dermatology are not this complicated or large, but when the skin cancers are more aggressive, it’s good to know your surgeon has done this before.
Stay tuned for updates over the next several weeks.

#FlapFriday No one wants skin cancer, but 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. If you have a skin cancer, our number one goal is to remove the skin cancer completely. Our second goal is to make it look like it never even happened.
This kind gentleman had an aggressive micro-nodular basal cell carcinoma located on his right cheek. It was removed after 1 stage of Mohs surgery in the office and repaired on the same day using an advancement flap. He was very happy with the result at his 3 week follow up.
Choosing a surgeon who is ACMS @mohs.college Fellowship-Trained and Board-Certified in Mohs surgery and complex reconstruction can help you get the best result possible when faced with treating a skin cancer.
This patient was gracious enough to allow us to share his photos for teaching purposes.

As the most common skin cancer and the most common cancer overall, we see a lot of Basal Cell Carcinomas at Clearview Dermatology. They usually appear as a pearly or a shiny bump on the skin, although they can appear in other forms. Basal cell carcinoma occurs most often on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the head and neck.
Most basal cell carcinomas are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun acquired over decades.
This gentleman had a nodular basal cell carcinoma, after two stages of Mohs Surgery in our outpatient office, the tumor was cleared. It was then repaired with a rhombic transposition flap on the same day. The patient was very happy with the result one month after surgery, shown in the last photo. While the result looks great at one month, we always advise patients that the natural process of scar remodeling and complete healing of the wound takes 6-12 months

In Dermatology, patients often ask “Doc, what happens if I don’t do anything about this skin cancer?”. For most skin cancers, they will tend to continue to slowly grow larger and larger. However, not all skin cancers, even those of the same classification, behave similarly. Sometimes they grow very rapidly with dramatic consequences. This patient had a small lesion on her forehead, which initially was thought to be a wart. Yet over the course of about 4 weeks, it went from being the size of a pencil eraser to the size of quarter. When the lesion was biopsied it was found to be a moderately differentiated Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
During removal by Mohs Surgery, it was found to extend almost a full centimeter in every direction and down to bone. Fortunately by using the Mohs technique, the tumor was cleared after 3 stages of surgery - all in the same day.
The defect after removal of the tumor was quite large and required a repair which could access the relative laxity within the temporal skin. A bilateral advancement flap was performed and was able to successfully close this large defect.
The patient is seen in the last photo at 2 months and was healing very well.
Choosing a surgeon who is ACMS @mohs.college fellowship-trained and Board-certified in Mohs Micrographic and Reconstructive Surgery means getting a surgeon with thousands more hours of training in complex reconstruction which can help you get the best result possible when faced with treating a skin cancer.
The patient was gracious enough to allow us to share her photos for teaching purposes.

Squamous cell carcinomas frequently occur on the sun exposed areas of the scalp. The scalp often catches UV rays directly and thus absorbs more radiation than other parts of the body. As a Mohs Micrographic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Overman frequently treats skin cancers of all types on the scalp. While removing the skin cancer completely is our number one goal, closing the defect in a cosmetically pleasing fashion so the patient can quickly go on with their day-to-day life is our second goal.
This patient had an aggressive type of squamous cell carcinoma on his scalp. It required 3 stages of taking tissue to completely clear the tumor. Once it was cleared, it was repaired using a rotation flap.
He was extremely grateful to have the tumor gone and wound repaired all in the same day.
