Surgical Excision
Wide local excision of skin cancer lesions
While many skin cancers are best treated with
Mohs Surgery, others in locations such as the chest or back can be treated with a traditional excision and repair, also known as wide local excision. This procedure consists of numbing the area, cutting out the lesion of concern with a set amount of normal tissue around the lesion (margins), then suturing the wound shut. The tissue is sent to a dermatopathologist who examines the tissue and confirms the lesion is completely removed. The results from the dermatopathologist are typically available within one week of the surgery. As a Board-Certified Dermatologist and Fellowship-Trained Skin Cancer Surgeon, Dr. Overman has years of experience treating thousands of skin cancers.
